Matthew, son of Alphaeus, was a Roman tax collector. As such
he was thought to be in collaboration with the enemy by the very ones from whom
he collected taxes.
Matthew’s Gospel was written to convince Jewish readers that
their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. Matthew preached
among the Jews for 15 years; his audiences included the Jewish enclave in
Ethiopia and places in the East.
